Soccer, a brief history – InfoBarrel

The players understood the violent nature of the game as they would often disguise themselves with lots of war paint and ornaments to avoid the wrath of revenge after the game. The game could last for hours and often carried on from one day to the next.

Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are all top teams in the English Premier Division, with world class players such as Frank Lampard, Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Didier Drogba, Rafael Van Der Vaart, Fernando Torres and Carlos Tevez.

At the end of the match, both sides would meet for a celebratory feast, showing the need to disguise themselves during the game.

The length of the pitch can vary largely and there is a legend of one game between two villages with goals ten miles apart. The soccer ball for Aqsaqtuk was made of animal hide and whale bones and is stuffed with hair, moss, feathers and wood shavings.

The two teams were normally named after birds, usually the ptarmigans (an arctic bird) versus the long-tails. Germany is ranked third, Brazil ranked fourth, Argentina ranked fifth and England ranked sixth.

After the game they would celebrate in a large communal igloo called qaggi.

FIFA World Rankings

These games were not very nice and very violent. Some Inuit believe the spirits of the dead travel to the northern lights and play an eternal game of soccer using a walrus head as the ball.

The popularity of soccer around the world is reflected in the player’s wages with some of the best paid sportsmen being soccer players. The game was normally played on a pitch that was often a mile long with goals at both ends. The two sides would also have song battles, with the players trying to embarrass the other team. However the game has been mentioned in the myths of the Inuit for hundreds of years. Many of the top footballers are earning up to 200,000 a week including Cristiano Ronaldo, Yaya Toure and Lionel Messi.. It was fairly common that players would receive broken bones and other serious injuries; in fact the game was pretty much a war with up to 500 players on each side.

As of January 2010, Spain is currently ranked first in the world by FIFA due to their Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010 victories.

Records show the Native American Indians played soccer or Pasuckuakohowog from approximately 1620, although it is likely that they were playing it earlier than this. The word Pasuckuakohowog means ‘they gather to play ball with the foot’.

Football in England

Netherlands are ranked second, finishing as runners up in the 2010 FIFA World Cup to Spain.

Players Wages

The game of soccer is very popular all around the world, including England where it is known as football. There are many English football leagues, with the top being the Barclay’s Premier Division. Matches from the Premier Division are watched throughout the world, with top teams and top players on display.

Nobody knows how long the Inuit have been playing their style of soccer called Aqsaqtuk, meaning soccer on ice. In summer, the two teams would play a game with the long-tails playing towards the water and the ptarmigans playing towards land, which is their favoured habitat

Top 5 Premier League Youngsters

With one game to go, they still have a chance of lifting the Premier League trophy for the first time in history, it would be their first top flight success in a huge 25 years, and they have already secured the best finishing position in the league since the 2008/2009 season. Another was the emergence of a 19 year old Belgian attacking midfielder named Adnan Januzaj. Due to his impressive debut season, multiple European powerhouses have begun monitoring Januzaj, with rumours abound that Juventus and the ultra-rich Paris Saint German are ready to make a bid in excess of 30 million to secure the young starlet’s services.

Jose Mourinho has been lamenting his lack of striking options for the whole of the 2013/2014 league season and, with Lukaku continuing to impress, he is sure to feature in Mourinho’s plans next season. Especially since Chelsea have lacked a world class striker since the similarly built Didier Drogba left the club.

5. Already a full England international player, Barkley’s performances have just continued to improve and he has shown that he can cut it in the big games as well.

It was hard to leave a lot of players out, such as the impressive Saido Berahino for West Brom and the reformed Ravel Morrison at West Ham. Raheem SterlingLiverpool

Another team that has had an excellent season is Liverpool. Despite their troubles, Southampton have always had an excellent academy, breeding top class talents such as Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, next in line is 18 year old left back Luke Shaw. Despite his best efforts, Sterling’s contribution has been slightly overshadowed by the incredible striking partnership of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez but, make no mistake, he has been absolutely vital in Liverpool’s season.

Recently, Januzaj committed his future to the Belgium international side, this was subject to speculation due to him being eligible to play for a number of countries including Kosovo, Croatia, Serbia, Turkey, Albania, Belgium and, eventually, England.

4. Does he stick to the old guns of Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard and the like, or does he bring in fresh, invigorating faces such as Luke Shaw, Ross Barkley and Raheem Sterling? We shall have to wait to find out!

. If Southampton manage to keep hold of their young star, along with their other talented players, they are in for a bright future.

Best Young Footballers In The Premier League

2. Finishing outside the top three for the first time in Premier League history and their worst position in the league since 1987, it has been a dismal performance. The 2013/2014 season was no different in this respect, and plenty of young starlets took to the pitch in a bid to prove that they can be amongst the best in the world. Alongside Jay Rodriguez, Rickie Lambert, Nathaniel Clyne, and Adam Lallana, Shaw has been a key part of Southampton’s excellent season under Maurio Pochettino. I, myself, have no doubt that at least one of these will be named amongst the elite in the future and they are all destined for glory if they continue as they have been doing.

1. One major player in this race for glory has been 19 year old winger Raheem Sterling. With dazzling pace, great ball control and an awareness beyond his years, Sterling is destined for greatness. Adnan JanuzajManchester United

In stark contrast the the previous two entries, Manchester United have had a dreadful season. What is more surprising is the future the England team. Ross Barkley is one of those young starlets, breaking into the Everton side at the start of the season, he has been a key player in helping Everton secure 5th place in the Premiership, featuring in 34 league games out of a possible 37. At the age of just 20, this central attacking midfielder has already been lauded as the next Paul Gascoigne and England’s answer to Michael Ballack. They are in a much more stable situation at the moment, but talk of a 30 million move to one of Europe’s elite has been in the pipeline for months now, with Real Madrid, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea all rumoured to be interested. Raheem Sterling broke into the Liverpool side in the 2012/2013 season under Brendan Rodgers and has been a key part of Liverpool’s attack since then. Walcott and Chamberlain were both shipped out to Arsenal for hefty transfer feesearly in their careers, but that was at a time when Southampton were struggling financially. This is in no part down to the exceptional English talent they place great emphasis on in their line ups. With the World Cup just over a month away, this will be giving Roy Hodgson that old football cliche of the best kind of headache: A selection headache. Luke ShawSouthampton Football Club

Southampton Football Club have had an excellent season, after years in turmoil following their relegation from the top flight at 27 successive years and then going into administration and being relegated to the third tier of English Football. But there were a few rays of hope during Moyes’ rein at Old Trafford, one was getting Wayne Rooney to agree to sign a new contract. Should Moyes have been sacked so soon? It remains to be seen.

As is the case with Raheem Sterling and Luke Shaw, the support for Barkley to be in the England squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Brazil has been growing all season. He has also been mentioned in the same breath as legendary midfielder Ronald Koeman.

Belgium have been tipped as future powerhouses for years now, ever since their young starlets started shining so brightly, with young Belgians playing for top clubs all over Europe. Despite his tender years, Lukaku already has 27 international caps and is part of a young Belgium squad who are set to become a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Along with a host of inexperienced players, Sterling has been tipped to make the plane to Brazil in June, with Roy Hodgson watching him closely and probably trying to decide whether it is worth the risk taking a host of youngsters to the biggest stage in football.

Best Youngsters In The Premier League

Credit: bbc.co.uk

3. So it was no surprise that some Belgian players showed up in the list. England’s future has been perennially pessimistic, with the old guns of Gerrard and Lampard declining with age having never really cut it on the International level and no new wave of youngsters shining brightly.

During his loan spells he has become key members of both West Brom and Everton sides, and at the age of just 20 he has two full Premier League seasons behind him, averaging just under a goal every two games. Since moving to Chelsea he has been unable to break into the first team squad there, and has been sent out on full season loans twice, first to West Bromwich Albion and then to Everton.

However, this season, that long awaited new wave has emerged and crashed onto the shores of the Premiership. Despite being only 18, Luke Shaw has already made his England debut, and there is no doubt, barring any major catastrophes, that he will push Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines out of the door in the next few years and become the first choice England left back.

How long he will stay at Southampton remains to be seen. Romelu LukakuChelsea

Another one of Belgium’s up and coming superstars, Romelu Lukaku is a 20 year old striker who signed for Chelsea after impressing during his debut season at Anderlecht, ending up as top scorer in the Belgian Pro-League. Ross BarkleyEverton

Since David Moyes’ departed Everton for the seemingly greener pastures of Manchester United, new manager Roberto Martinez has brought a new sense of youth and vibrancy through the ranks at Everton. This being said, the future is most certainly bright for the Premier League and, looking at my top list, for England and Belgium.

Every season a new wave of youngsters breaks through the ranks to take centre stage on one of the biggest stages of world football, the English Premier League. Januzaj impressed in his full debut for Manchester United, starting against Sunderland and scoring twice to come from behind and secure a 2-1 win. This comes after the retirement of the great Sir Alex Ferguson and the appointment and subsequent sacking of his successor, David Moyes. Since the beginning of the season heads have been turning towards the excellent young left back, and with the World Cup just around the corner the calls for him to be on the plane to Brazil come June have been increasing in volume. Lukaku has shown he is cut out for the physically demanding Premier League, and standing at 6″3 with a muscular build it is no surprise

Dortmund boss Tuchel plans to keep reported Spurs target Bender

So we are very happy with him and we are planning with him.”

The Sunday People, meanwhile, reports that Spurs could face competition from Manchester City for another of their targets, West Brom striker Saido Berahino.

The Baggies are said to want 25million for the 21-year-old, a valuation which may put the north Londoners off.

. “He is a constant in the squad.

“It’s a pleasure to work with him, because he is a total team player.

Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel has reiterated his desire to keep reported Tottenham target Sven Bender at the Westfalenstadion.

Bender has been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United in the past and is reported to be among Spurs’ targets for the summer, but Tuchel is not ready to plan for life without the midfielder.

“Sven Bender is a leader,” the Dortmund boss told reporters

Unusual Football Team Names in England and Wales

See also Dialectical Materialism and Football

London also is home for another oddly named club – Crystal Palace. They are not, however, the only club in the UK to have a name of a day in their name as Abergavenny Thursdays can still be found playing in the Gwent County League Division Three. This is one of Wales’ oldest clubs, being formed in 1927 but has suffered hard times in recent seasons. The name was changed shortly afterwards to Royal Arsenal and then Woolwich Arsenal.

There did, however, used to be a team called London Hotspur, and the only relation that team has to Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur is that the club was called Hotspur Football Club when it was formed in 1882, but changed its name to avoid confusion with London Hotspur. This club is within the boundaries of the city of Nottingham, unlike its local rival Nottingham Forest, who play from the oddly name City Ground, which is on the other side of the River Trent, outside the city boundaries.

Cricket Background

The history of Derby County’s name dates back to 1884 when the club was formed as an offshoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club and wanted to name themselves Derbyshire County FC, but that idea was rejected by the local football association who thought the name was too long, so the club became known as just Derby County.

Arsenal, as we all know, is one of many famous clubs in London, but London is unusual out of the European capital cities in not having a league team with the name London in its title. The team was originally called Abergavenny Rangers before changing its name to the mouthful Abergavenny Rangers Thursdays, and then later dropping the Rangers.

Accrington Stanley

Perhaps the honour for the most unusual name in the football league should go to Accrington Stanley, but the origin is quite dull as the team was once known as Stanley Villa when it was formed in 1891, only changing its name to Accrington Stanley two years later. Take Notts County for example. The team though was originally called Dial Square when it was formed in 1886. Some even believe the name came from the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, though again no link has ever been confirmed.

Another team with a cricket background is Sheffield Wednesday, which was originally known as the Wednesday Cricket Club, which used to meet on Wednesday afternoons because that was the day the local steel workers traditionally had a half day off. Stanley Villa was so called because it was originally a pub team from the Stanley Arms in Stanley Street in the town.

Another team allegedly named after a pub is Crewe Alexandra, which used to play from a pub called the Princess Alexandra. That club is Plymouth Argyle, and there are various theories as to where the name Argyle comes from. The team was named after the famous exhibition centre that stood at the top of Sydenham Hill in south London until it burnt down in 1936.

Plymouth Argyle

The origins of another uniquely named club in the league are less clear. Take Stockport County for example, an odd name given the town is manifestly not a county, nor has it ever been. The most popular, unsurprisingly, is that it was originally a pub team from the Argyle Tavern, though no connection to that pub has ever been proven. There is also a local street called Argyle Terrace. Maybe Arsenal should have called itself London Arsenal.

Nottingham Forest Play at the City GroundThere are a number of oddly named teams in England and Wales but a little research can discover often mundane origins. It is the only club to have a tube station named after it.

There are a number of clubs with either town or city after their name, but one club – Swansea – has been called both town and city during its history.

The term county though as part of a football team name is not necessarily an accurate reflection of the status of the team. Allegedly, because the club used to be called just Crewe FC and was a spinoff from the Crewe Cricket Club. The name Hotspur comes from Sir Henry Percy (the Harry Hotspur in Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part One) who lived in the area in the 14th century.

In 1913, the club moved from being a south London club to a north London club when it took up a new home in Highbury, and then dropped the name Woolwich a year later. The answer though is quite simple as Stockport became a county borough in 1890 when Heaton Norris and Heaton Norris Rovers merged to form the new team.. It didn’t adopt the name Alexandra until later.

Workplace Origins

As well as pubs, another common source of football names and nicknames are factories and other workplaces that the club originated from, the most famous of these of course is Arsenal, formed by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich

Jose Mourinho knows everything – Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma

Then he’ll he say to us: ‘I warned you, lads.’ He leaves nothing to chance — it’s really the best. ESPN FC’s Craig Burley is fed up with Jose Mourinho and believes Chelsea need to follow Liverpool’s example in sacking their manager. But sometimes in football there are times when everything goes wrong.”

French defender Zouma, 20, has featured in seven of those games, usually in place of club captain John Terry.. He told Le Parisien that Mourinho is a different character when he is not watching a game, saying he does not rant and rave at his players behind closed doors.

The former St Etienne defender also said Chelsea’s current run of form has been extremely hard for the players to digest.

“That’s when he’s on the sidelines but he never tears strips off us,” Zouma said. ESPN FC’s Craig Burley believes that Chelsea need a fresh approach in order to improve on their recent performance.

Kurt Zouma has offered his backing to under pressure Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, saying the Portuguese coach rarely gets an opposition lineup wrong and often predicts how his own team could concede a goal.

“After defeats, there’s a strange atmosphere in the dressing room,” he said. “It wouldn’t be any use — we’re already at rock bottom [after a defeat].

“Every goal we concede, he’ll have shown it to us before on video. We’re steeped in that culture so it’s hard for us.”

The defending Premier League champions have had a disastrous start to the season, picking up just eight points from eight league games to sit fifth from bottom in the table.

Zouma is one player that still has faith in the former Real Madrid manager. I’ve never seen him get an opposing team wrong. Mourinho has taught us to hate defeat. Mourinho, who received the “full support” of the club earlier this week, said after their latest defeat against Southampton that he would resign if he did not have the backing of his players.

“And then he’s incredibly intelligent — he knows everything. I don’t know how he does it.

While everyone seems to be speculating about a possible sacking of Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, ESPN FC’s Gabriele Marcotti thinks the club is going to give him every chance to prove himself before pulling the plug. “There’s complete silence — no one opens their mouth

Deloitte’s Soccer Cash Analysis Shows Arsenal, Chelsea Failing to Exploit Their Sponsors

The other interesting news is that three of the top four teams are not members of the English Premier League, which is usually regarded as the richest league on the planet. EPL teams dominate the rest of the rankings, however, with seven of the 20 spots.

If you drill into the numbers and pull out the advertiser fees as a percentage of overall revenue, you find that there’s a broad correlation between being a rich club and having sponsor fees make up 30 percent or more of your revenue. the club’s commercial revenue continues to lag behind its European peers and is a continued area of focus, which has recently prompted a major restructuring of its commercial department. And if you compare Chelsea and Liverpool’s sponsorship levels — Chelsea’s is lower even though it’s the bigger club — you can see that Deloitte also confirms my previous speculation that Chelsea vastly undervalues its brand.

Last Updated Nov 27, 2010 3:45 PM EST

According to this year’s “Football Money League” report from Deloitte, some soccer clubs — Arsenal and Chelsea, specifically — are falling down on the job when it comes to pricing their exposure with sponsors. All Rights Reserved. At 55 percent sponsor revenue, the club shows just how much sponsors can be exploited if commercial chiefs are canny enough.

2010 CBS Interactive Inc.. The annual report ranks and analyzes international teams by their revenues, and breaks out sponsorship and advertising income.

Real Madrid is once again the richest team on the planet at 401.4 million in revenue:. Here’s the ranking by revenue, with the sponsor fees broken out:

Club, sponsors, sponsor fees, % of revenues:

Real Madrid, Bwin, 139.2 million, 35%FC Barcelona, Etisalat and Betfair, 112 million, 31%Manchester United, Saudi Telecom, Hublot, AIG, 82.2 million, 25%Bayern Munich, T-Home/Deutsche Telekom, 159.3 million, 55%Arsenal, Emirates, 56.5 million, 21%Chelsea, Samsung, Thomas Cook and Etihad, 11.7 million, 26%Liverpool, Carlsberg, 79.5 million, 37%Juventus, New Holland Group, 54.3 million, 27%Inter Milan, Pirelli, 52.6 million, 27%AC Milan, Bwin, 64.1 million, 33%FC Barcelona’s sponsor income is much lower than it should be because its main shirt sponsorship is Unicef — the club is so rich it gives the organization money, not the other way around.

The big surprise is Bayern Munich, which struck a huge deal with T-Home even though it is in the lower profile German Bundesliga.

At Arsenal, Deloitte agrees with my previous look at the club’s dim commercial achievements:
